What others say about Publication Production using PageMaker
Publication Production using PageMaker is a good example of a slim volume that focuses on a specific aspect of using version 7 of PageMaker "for the production of newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and other formatted publications". Of special interest is the fact that this title is Australian and the author, Gordon Woolf, is well known for his remarkable depth of knowledge of PageMaker.
In this title he provides a "supplement to the manuals" designed to lead the user to effective and time saving solutions. The reader is assumed to already have some familiarity with the application and, of course, the operating system on which it runs.
The book is about production, not design (although there is a short, sharp item, Some general layout hints that spells out some important design rules). Among the many practical things it shows how to do are: create templates and styles, create and use tags, perform a data merge (one of PM 7's significant new plug-in features), and use PageMaker's scripting language. The examples used to illustrate the text are in a newspaper context, but are applicable to most multipage publications.
A valuable feature of the book is its many hints; the author has become a reference point for professional PageMaker users who feed in their experiences, problems, and solutions (which are sometimes hit upon by chance). Anyone who uses PageMaker on a regular? basis will find these hints a resource in their own right.
The book is supported by a website that contains a wealth of resources including scripts and templates as well as other information; it also has details for PageMakr List an email list of more than a thousand PageMaker users worldwide. Visit www.worsleypress.com.
Not for novices, but an important resource for regular users of PageMaker. - Major Keary, Book News
Publication Production using PageMaker is a guide for users of PageMaker 7, and especially those involved in laying out serial publications such as newspapers and magazines. It is based in part of the author's earlier works covering earlier versions of PageMaker.
Clearly the author knows his stuff. Woolf's book reflects his four decades in publishing and an intimate hands-on experience with PageMaker over many years. The book is a fine example of the skills of an accomplished book designer and laout artist.
Many books of this type are written "on assignment" by a generalist technical author and offer little more than a rehash of existing user manuals and guides. Woolf's book is a happy exception. He covers what the manual doesn't and provides an expert tutorial for the PageMaker user. Woolf pulls no punches when it comes to the shortcomings and failure points of the PageMaker product. He guides the reader around the land mines and pitfalls.
The book expands beyond just PageMaker with sections covering Photoshop, prepress plugins for Adobe, typefaces and even the next step forward in the Adobe product line - InDesign. Many useful PageMaker scripts are available at the author's website. A username and password is provided to give access to these resources. At Rowse Reviews we don;t use PageMaker. But we are hanging on to the review copy for future reference, just in case. - John Culleton, Editor, "Rowse Reviews".
Your book, PPuP is enjoyable, interesting, and becoming very useful. Thank you. .- Anthony Brahams, The Cairn Press, Books for Magicians
I was one of the first guys to use PageMaker in anger (well, in Australia, anyway). So I have progressed from 1 ... 7. Then (was it last year or this year?) I looked over Gordon Woolf's latest book on PageMaker wizardry and producing publications with it. Sob! I was on about page 3 when I saw a neat trick described that I could have been using all these years because it became available in v.3 or something. It was down hill (for me) all the way from there! - Geoffrey Heard, MarketNOW, Melbourne.
Just a short email to tell you that order( Publication Production using Pagemaker) arrived today and as I scanned through the various chapters I realised what a very valuable asset I have in this book. I am really delighted with the book and the opportunity to avail of information on the site. I have had a look at the members site and downloaded the templates, so, thank you again Gordon. - Michael Killen
And from a comment on a mail list by publisher Peter Hupalo (whose books include How To Start And Run A Small Book Publishing Company): Gordon Woolf's book, Publication Production Using Pagemaker, gives a hint for dealing with this, I don't recall it exactly, but if you restack the various pieces of text just right, you can get it all to go back to one piece. Hope this helps. Pagemaker 6.5 does seem quirky to me. For those new to Pagemaker, in addition to Gordon's "Publication Production Using Pagemaker," Adobe publishers "Class Room In A Book" books for Pagemaker and their other software, which can be helpful. Have fun! When in doubt, blame the software! I do! - Peter
The book arrived today, thank you. That's an amazingly fast service - quicker than mail from other parts of the UK :) - Pat & the Smallpaws Gang <http://www.smallpaws.co.uk>.

Most manuals emphasise the freedom in design and production given by programs such as PageMaker -- this book does not; instead it emphasises how such a program fits into the more rigid structure needed by a strictly formatted publication working to a deadline. There are templates, scripts and more on the book website. For a list of included scripts (more will be added), click here.
