Getting PageTools to work with PageMaker hints

The following may help. It is the email which Extensis distributed at the time of the introduction of PageMaker 7. I think PageTools was first broken by the PageMaker 6.52 update. There was a PageTools 2.01 update but if I'm remembering correctly there were mixed reports on its success.

If you are using a Mac, the file referred to below is no longer available from Extensis. It is possible it may be available from
someone on the PageMakr email list (see http://www.makingpages.org/pagemaker) or on one of the PageMaker newsgroups.

It is also possible under either version that you can install the software but not get the automatic startup to work. In such cases the workaround seems to be to start PageBars from the Utilities>Plugins menu.

The old email From Extensis:

INFORMATION ON PAGETOOLS FOR PAGEMAKER 7.0 USERS

Extensis' PageTools 2.0, a plug-in for Adobe's Pagemaker, is not compatible with the latest version of Pagemaker, version 7.0. PageTools is a discontinued product and there is no further development currently planned.

However, due to the popular demand by existing PageTools users, Extensis has done some investigation and has come up with a workaround for you to use your current version of PageTools with Pagemaker 7.0. This workaround is only for English versions of Pagemaker and PageTools.

Following are the instructions to get PageTools to work in Pagemaker 7.0:

Macintosh:

You must have a previous version of Pagemaker where PageTools is or can be installed.

1) Click on the following link (a link no longer available at the Extensis site, the file references was Start_PageTools.sit.hqx ) to download a "Start PageTools" file from the Extensis web site.

2) Place the file in your Startup Items folder in your System Folder. This will replace an older file with the same name.

3) Move the following files/folders from Adobe Pagemaker 6.x:RSRC:Plugins: to Pagemaker 7:RSRC:Plugins:

PageBars Categories (folder and contents)
PageBars Toolbars (folder and contents)
PageAlign.add
PageBars.add
PageCaps.add
PageColors.add
PageGlossary.add
PageGuides.add
PageMarks.add
PageMover.add
PagePreview.add
PagePrinter.add
PageRuler.add
PageScaler.add
PageTabs.add
PageThumb.add
PageTips.add
PageToolbox.add
PageType.add
PageZoom.add

4) Restart your machine

5) Launch Pagemaker 7.0. The PageTools palette should appear just as it did in your previous installation.

Windows:

You will need to copy a number of files from you PM 6.x folder to your PM 7.0 folder.

1) Copy the following files from PM6x\RSCS\USENGLSH\PLUGINS
to the corresponding Pagemaker 7 folder.

Pagebars (folder)
PGALIGN.ADD
PGBAR.ADD
PGCOLORS.ADD
PGGUIDES.ADD
PGMOVER.ADD
PGPRINT.ADD
PGSCALER.ADD
PGTHUMB.ADD
PGTOOLBX.ADD
PgTools.add
Pcexcept.txt
PTTYPES.PTT

2) Copy the "xtoolbx2.dll" that should be installed in your Pagemaker 6.5 folder into your Pagemaker 7.0 folder.

3) Launch Pagemaker 7.0.

4) Select any of the PageTools tools. This activates PageTools to work with Pagemaker 7.0.

In order to work with PageTools each time you work in Pagemaker 7, you will need to do step 4 in order to activate PageTools.

Please remember that PageTools is a discontinued product and that no technical support can be given on the above workarounds.

We thank you for your continued interest in Extensis.
