Newspaper Production using PageMaker 6.5

book cover

PageMaker is a brilliant program for production of any kind of printed material, but most training, whether via printed material or on courses, emphasises the freedom to place words and pictures in any position.

This book is different — it is based on the ability of PageMaker, using templates and Styles, to have one or several people produce a regular publication with a consistent style and appearance.

Whatever your view on how a newspaper should look, this book will guide you into using PageMaker to achieve that look. It is based on practical experience in newspaper production and on the training of production staff in newspapers over a wide area in Australia and on feedback from around the world. It covers Windows and Mac.

  • Paperback (172 pages, 7 x 9) and including an e-mail service to answer queries (the scripts and templates can be downloaded from a special web site). US$29.95, UK£21, A$60.50

You can download a PDF (Acrobat 3) file with selected hints and tips from the book. This file is approx 292kb.
Newspaper Production sample file. If your browser is enabled to use Acrobat 3 or later you will see this within your browser window; otherwise you will be able to download it for viewing later. You will need Acrobat 3 reader which is available free from Adobe's web site. This file in itself should save enough to justify the cost of the book.

Additional scripts are available as they are developed. One of these is a set of scripts to automate many newspaper layout processes. You can download a four-page leaflet describing these in PDF format.

New version of PageMaker: Adobe Software released PageMaker 7 in the US on July 11, 2001 in the US. This was mainly a "maintenance release" to ensure that PageMaker will work with current operating systems such as Windows2000 and Mac OS X (though the latter will be in its classic mode only). There are also new filters and an ability to directly place files from new versions of Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. It also has import filters for QuarkXPress 4.1 and MS Publisher 2000 files. None of this affects the contents of this book.

However, the new version of PageMaker does include a Data Merge feature which would seem to be useful in bringing in small display ads from details entered into a database or spreadsheet. We have issued a supplement to the present book on a suggested use of the DataMerge plugin for a very simple ad-booking database which is available on line to buyers of the 6.5 edition of the book.

Our new book for PageMaker 7 was published in 2002 and is recommended for anyone who may upgrade even if at a later date as it has a lot of additional information and very little does not apply also to PM6.5.
