3. PAGE LAYOUT FOR LINUX

=======================

Bjørn Smalbro in Denmark wrote: "I am a fond reader of your newsletter which I think is brilliant. I really like effective and no-fuss way it is done. Last night I updated one of my links in Explorer and found to my surprise that the old dtp program PageStream had been ported to Linux making it quite a giant in a world where there only are Scribus and LaTEX. Take a look for yourself. <http://www.grasshopperllc.com/>"

This is the program originally produced in 1986 for the Atari computer which many will recall under the name Publishing Partner, and it has apparently been available for Mac and Windows for some time. The new release for Linux also marks a drop in price to US$99 for the download version on any platform for the standard version and US$149 for the "Professional" version plus US$10 extra to have a copy mailed to you as well as being able to download.

They claim on their website that "a quick look at QuarkXpress 5.0's top 20 wish list includes 11 items already implemented in PageStream, and PageStream has 8 of the top 10!"

4. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

========================

Ann Phillips wrote: "In translating/converting PM7 files to .PDF format in PM7 (File, Export, to PDF format), all underlines in my stand-alone headlines were lost. The underlines were placed in while typing the text, i.e., as a characteristic of the font. Underlines in body text were NOT dropped. I tried running the PM7 (and also some PM5) files through pdfFactory, a software conversion program. ... Same result. All underlines in stand-alone heads were dropped. Underlines were not dropped in pdfFactory when I converted a document from MS Word to .PDF, but in Word the headlines are integrated with the text.

"I don't often put underlines under main heads, which is probably why I haven't run into this before. However, a client requested this, so I tried to comply. Anyone run into this? How about InDesign? Does this happen with this program also?"

We replied: I'll put your question in the next issue of our Format newsletter because while I've seen some odd placement of underlines at times I haven't seen it disappear completely in many years. What I would try is some different PPD files in creating the postscript by printing to file and choosing initially the Distiller PPD and, if that method does the same, try another PPD.

The underline in most fonts is not, in my opinion, very well placed and the printout can often be very different to what is seen on screen. Therefore, if they are single line headings you may get better results creating a style using the rule below settings of paragraph style. This may also be the answer with multiple line heads -- to make them into several single line paragraphs. Any better ideas?

Jean Grossholtz told us: "I am now forced to use InDesign...I need to know what happened to 'Booklet' under Plug-ins in Pagemaker."

We replied: Depending on the version of InDesign you should find a booklet script somewhere on the installation CD or on Adobe Studio <http://share.studio.adobe.com/> (do a search for booklet or imposition). With CS the best option is probably the US$49 PageMaker plugin for InDesign (which you may get free if you have the full Creative Suite). This includes a cutdown version of ALAP software's InBooklet but which still does more than the PageMaker booklet plugin does.

5. UPDATES AND HINTS

====================

Computer commentator Bill Blinn is usually not easy to impress, but he is (except for one persistent bug) about the recently released Corel Graphics Suite 12, the first release since Corel changed hands. He's a CorelDraw enthusiast but has had harsh things to say of some earlier releases. The suite costs US$399 for the full package and US$179 for the upgrade/crossgrade. One of the minor items, but which may be worthwhile for many is the inclusion of Bitsream Font Navigator, and expected swag of fonts. Details: <http://www.610tech.net/20040314.shtml>

The Implementation date assigning new 13-digit ISBNs to books and similar products will be January 1, 2007. Initially the 13-digit numbers will be achieved by putting 978 in front of the ISBN and recalculating the check digit (which effectively makes the ISBN the same as the number in the Bookland EAN barcodes. However from that date further ISBNs will be created by also using a 979 prefix. Full details of the change are at <http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/isbn/transition.asp>
