About The Worsley Press
The Worsley Press was started by Gordon Woolf in 1990. The incentive was that the company which published Gordon's book How to Start and Produce a Magazine in 1986 went into liquidation a year later, failing to pay most of the royalties, and with copies sold off as discounted remainders. Gordon decided that if he wasn't going to make money from the book, it should at least be his own fault, and so rewrote it to take into account the substantial changes which had taken place and published a second edition through The Worsley Press in 1991. The third edition followed in 2000.
The Worsley Press has been selling on the Internet since 1995.
The business is named after the ghost town of Worsley in Western Australia, once a thriving timber town of 1000 people, but which now has just the former manager's house and the more recent former church (built in1908) - the latter was for many years the home of a thriving folk club. "The House" was also home to a possum which became quite famous.
Gordon has worked in magazines and newspapers for more than 30 years, including starting a successful publishing business in London which published a trade paper for the musical instrument trade worldwide, and subsequently published a music magazine in Sydney. He has been manager of a weekly community newspaper, editor of a provincial newspaper group, sub-editor on two of Australia's largest circulation magazines, chief sub-editor of a group of suburban newspapers, and owner-editor of a small-town weekly.
He has trained in newspaper production, and writes newspaper automation scripts for newspapers. But now The Worsley Press is a small but well established book publisher, selling specialist titles worldwide.
Geoffrey Heard started an association with The Worsley Press several years ago, as an author, handling layout, proofreading and in a general advisory capacity. He took over the ownership and management of the business in 2005.
